Day One: 318

It seems like it was much easier to start last time. Today was a little tough. I started the day with a banana. A few hours later I had a few Cuties. I didn't drink hardly any water today. So that wasn't so great. It's interesting how the easiest things become the most difficult to remember. When I got home I had a nice filling meal: a few colorful peppers, some dry broccoli slaw, an onion mixed with black and pinto beans, corn and balsamic vinaigrette all over two small and moist chicken tenders with a piece of 100% whole wheat toast. It was...tasty ;) Despite the tough day I already feel quite a bit better. I didn't get my walking in but got plenty done at work, so I'll have to set a routine for that.

Here are my day one pics. (Avert your eyes if you must :/ ) I weighed in today at 318. If you don't feel comfortable with weighing every day, don't. Keep a journal of how you feel from day to day instead. You'll still notice the difference. It may even do more good for you than weighing in. I'm weighing in strictly for the purpose of the blog. Otherwise I prefer journaling.

Anyway. I promise that this will get better and hopefully more in depth. This is a work in progress. Feel free to leave questions or comments.

A Journey Toward Wellness

My name is Coby Wright. I am 28 years old, and I weigh over 300 pounds. I find it difficult to do what most people consider normal activities. I have trouble getting out of bed or off the couch. I can't kneel for more than a few minutes. I don't have hardly any flexibility left; not that I ever did :/. Getting up and down stairs is painful, and I feel so much pain all over my body that I often feel like life is not worth continuing. I still retain my strength, which aside from great people and organizational skills and full fluency in Spanish, is what helps me keep my job.

About 8 months ago Amy Johnson, the mother of my favorite girl, Missy, gave me a great gift and opportunity. She offered to pay for visits to who I believe to be one of the most knowledgable people in his field, Mark Basil. Mark helped me realize where I was at, where I wanted to be, and how to get there. He was patient, encouraging, and understanding. We immediately set out options for meals that were healthy yet filling and satisfying.

For two months I made the meals consisting of fruits, veggies, nuts, and beans. Coupled with a half hour of walking every day, in those two months, I lost 45 pounds. I hadn't felt that good, physically, for a very long time. I hadn't felt that good mentally and emotionally...ever. I was on cloud 9. I couldn't be stopped. I even began to encourage people at the gym to follow the same routine and diet that I was following. Many found success while others struggled. I taught them how to make different variations of the meal that I ate every day in one form or another. I began to sell the cooked meals to people who were on the go and didn't have the time or will to make the meals themselves. It was an instant but short lived success.

After those two glorious and encouraging months I finally hit my wall. I fell back into old habits. I stopped exercising and eating well. In point of fact, I ate rather horribly. I gained all the weight back in one month and fell into a deep depression.

It's been a few months now, and I've had enough. I'm in way too much pain for someone my age. I'm tired of feeling and looking terrible. So now I'm starting again. I have to. For me. So I decided to chronicle my journey this time. I hope to find encouragement in doing so. I hope you can find encouragement in it as well. I hope that we realize we are not alone. I am not famous, nor is my family. I'm just a normal guy. I may not succeed, but I sure hope to. I hope to not only chronicle the journey with photo updates and journaling, but I also hope to chronicle the recipes and exercises and routines that I find most helpful. So please follow along and stay strong. Good luck!
